Urban Decay: Naked 3 Palette

I am very excited to share with you swatches and pictures of the new Urban Decay, Naked 3 eyeshadow palette. Urban Decay is definitely my favourite eye shadow brand, I purchased the other two naked palettes and use them on a daily basis. When I heard Naked 3 was being released I had to get it!

This eyeshadow palette comes with a large mirror and hard case which I love, it holds beautiful rose hued neutral colours. These shades look wonderful with my pink undertone skin, but they are definitely neutral enough to look amazing on all different skin tones.

The Naked 3 palette also comes with a double ended makeup brush for blending your shadow to perfection. It works wonderfully! Another great thing that comes with this palette is four different eyeshadow primers from Urban Decay's collection (Original, Sin, Eden & Anti-Aging). Each sample is said to hold about a weeks worth of primer, that is pretty amazing. I use the original eyeshadow primer potion very often, so I am looking forward to trying these other primers.

This can be purchased through Sephora, and retails for $62.00.

Hope you enjoyed! Thank you for reading.

30 Day Circuit Squat Challenge Update

So we are both half way through the Popsugar’s circuit squat challenge (which you can read about here) and we wanted to share how it’s going!

Steph: Well.. I officially am not a fan of squats anymore. LOL! That’s a lie.. I actually really, really love squats because of how much of a difference they make. Plus I love the burn! I love the basic squat. What I don’t like it having to switch up all these squats and do leg lifts and kicks. I used to be able to just enjoy myself squatting while getting lost in my favourite TV shows.. I could just push myself and go, go go. With this one I’m sweating and feeling like I’m going to pass out after 1-2 circuits. I guess it’s a great thing that they are making a difference.. I should start appreciating the harder things in life. My least favourite is the narrow squat… I struggle with that one the most.

BUT I received some feedback from my man. He said that my legs are too hard now and he can no longer use them as a pillow. WOOHOO!!! Yay for building muscle!

Jenn: This challenge has not been my best, but I’ve been doing alright. Not going to lie, I have missed a couple days, and I’m trying to make up for them by working through my rest days. I love the feeling in my muscles when I do squats, and doing these different styles really do target other areas. I feel the suma squats definitely hurt the most for me. Today reaches my halfway point, and I am going to push myself HARD until the end!

Thanks for reading and keep on squatting!

Weekly Goals

Hi all,

I wanted to check in and let you know I am feeling as motivated as ever. I'm actually down 10 lbs in the last month (though actually dropped most of that in 2 weeks) and feel GREAT! These weekly goals are keeping me in line and on track. I'm really happy I'm sticking to them.

How did I do last week?
Quite well! I had many ups and only one or two downs. I successfully stayed on track even though it was my work Christmas party on Saturday. Dessert being served at midnight? CHEESECAKE!? I still passed and didn't even take any home when I was offered!

I did actually eat past 9 on Thursday but I stopped at 9:05 as I wasn't going to just NOT eat the froyo Jenn and I had just purchased after a night of power shopping. Plus we only got home at around 8:55 so I can't hate on myself for that.

I've decided to reset new goals starting today. Here they are:
  1. Preplan every meal - This means I need to think ahead about what I will be eating and put thought into how it will affect the rest of my day.
  2. No snacking past 9 - Because of my new job sometimes I won't get off work until 9pm and will need to come home and eat. I will allow myself to only have "dinner" after 9 but no snacking is allowed. (I will still try to plan and bring a lunch to work though sometimes I prefer having a late dinner)
  3. No eating any more christmas cookies or buying any junk.
  4. Consume 5 servings of fruits/vegetables every day.
Also, I'll be following a couple of these tips that I found here:

There you have it. Have you been setting goals? I'd love to hear them!

Thanks for reading,

Steph

Weekly Goals

Hi all,

You may have seen my post last week where I talked about my weekly goals. I was quite successful except for a slight blip last Thursday where I ate over my 1600 calories.

I am proud to say I successfully completed 6/7 days ( and still 2/3 goals on that day) instead of not giving my health or meals a second thought. It feels really good and I dropped quite a few lbs. So like I had said previously, I will be doing this every week will continue to post about it.

Here are my goals for the week:

  1. No eating past 9 (this is and probably always will be hard for me)
  2. Consuming 4-5 fruits/veggies per day (never struggled with this in the beginning of my lifestyle change but now I'm slacking!)
  3. Eat breakfast every morning (my morning struggle.. not hungry and rushed)

I WILL do this! Thanks for your support! :)

Do you have any goals? I'd love to hear them so please share!

Hey you... Yes, YOU!

Stop being unhappy with yourself.

You are perfect.

Stop wishing you looked like someone else, or wishing people liked you as much as they liked someone else.

Stop trying to get attention from those who hurt you.

Stop hating your body, your face, your personality, your quirks. Love them, without those things you
wouldn't be you, and why would you want to be anyone else?

Be confident with who you are, and smile. It'll draw people in.

If anyone hates on you because you love yourself, then you stick your middle finger in the air and say screw it. My happiness will not depend on others anymore.

I am happy because I love who I am, I love my flaws, I love my imperfections, because they make me, me... and "me" is pretty amazing!

(I found a quote from an unknown author and had to elaborate it into a post for you guys, and myself. Love yourself!)

30 Day Squat Circuit Challenge

Hi all,

I am LOVING on 30 day challenges lately. It keeps me motivated and really helps me to form habits. I remember when I started doing squats I absolutely hated them. I couldn't really do too many in a row.. but now they are a staple for me!

That is why I've decided to push myself in a new yet familiar way. Here is the 30 day challenge I am currently participating in and am now on day 3!

If you are planning on doing this challenge  PLEASE read the detailed instructions as one rep of the kicks/lifts is when you do both legs. Always good to make sure you're doing the exercise right to avoid injury as well.

Jenn and I were planning on starting this challenge but unfortunately on day 1 she came down with an extremely bad cold/flu. She will be starting in a few days and we will both be updating you around the 1/2 way point!

I can't wait to see the progress!

If you're participating in this challenge please let me know. I'd love to hear everyone else's thoughts on this one as I know a lot of you ALSO did not enjoy the plank challenge lol!

Keep squatting!

Weekly Goals

Hi all,

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and if you're local got to enjoy some of the sparkly white stuff we had fall from the sky ;). I know most people that I know don't really enjoy the snow but I love it and think it's so pretty!

Anyways, I really need to get my butt in gear and start focusing on my health. I've really been slacking so decided to make weekly goals for myself again. I have started with small yet attainable goals. I actually started this yesterday (which was successful) and will continue until Saturday and repost new goals at that time.

Here they are!

1. Stay within 1600 calories
2. Do not eat past 9pm
3. Use the exercise bike for at least 10 minutes every single night.

I also have a new 30 day challenge on the go which you will hear about soon :)!

Do you have any goals? Want to join me in setting weekly goals? Let me know and we can work on this together!

Have a great week!

Homemade Hot Chocolate

Skip buying the premade packets, and make it at home! It tastes so much better :)

This recipe is simple and it makes a delicious hot chocolate. It is perfect for this time of year to warm up after coming in from the cold, I think it’s comforting and soothing. Most children and adults love it!

Mix the following ingredients in a bowl:
3 ½ cups sugar
2 ¼ cups cocoa
1 tbsp salt

This mixture makes 92, 8 oz servings! Store in an airtight container to last for the season.

Add 2 tbsps to one cup of hot milk. Topping with mini marshmallows is my favourite, but you could also use whip cream and chocolate shavings. Be creative and garnish with a candy cane, yum!

This also makes a great gift idea, package nicely and get crafty!

Hope you enjoy this as much as I do, and keep warm.

Novemeber's Beauty Questions Answered!

Hi all,

Here are our beauty questions for the month of November. If you have any questions you'd like us to answer in our next post please either comment on this post, email us, or message us directly on Facebook.

Here we go!

Do you wear a full face of makeup everyday?
S: Not usually. I’d say maybe 3-4/7 days I will wear a full face of makeup. There are a lot of days where I don’t wear any makeup at all. I’ve actually been wearing a fresh, clean face out a lot lately and I’m surprised how comfortable I feel without makeup on. I never thought I’d feel this way!

J: I absolutely wear makeup everyday, but sometimes not all day. I won’t leave the house without wearing some form of makeup.

What is your greatest beauty "sin"?
S: I will never ever be able to just let zits, pimples or blackheads alone for more than 24 hours. I will try to treat them with my tea tree oil but after 24 hours of staring at it I can’t take it anymore and will pop them.

J: Picking…… Ugh I’m so bad for it.

Describe your perfect mascara. Have you found one that fits your specifications?
S: I have found two that I truly enjoy which are Covergirl’s Fusion Lashblast and Bare Escentual’s Buxom Lash. The reason I like these two so much is because of how much it volumizes my lashes. I am also a fan of the style of brushes so that is a major bonus! Highly recommended.

J: I buy whatever mascara is on sale, my lashes are pretty easy to work with. I normally have the best luck with maybelline mascaras.

What kind of coverage do you prefer from foundation?
S: I prefer a medium coverage from a pressed powder foundation. If it’s mineral .. I’m even happier!

J: Full coverage is where it’s at for me, I don’t feel comfortable with anything less. I have some acne scarring and still break out often so I have comfort knowing that I have a foundation that will cover those spots when I really need it!

Favorite high end brand?
S: MAC for sure. I love all their products and am rarely disappointed. I can list off all the shades I like in eyeshadow, foundation, blush and lipstick. lol!  If I was being more specific and thinking product it would be Urban Decay for eyeshadows.. 100/10 in quality. Just out of this world!

J: I can’t name just one. My current favourites are; Vichy, Urban Decay & Kat Von D.

Thanks for Reading :)

NSV: Jeans!

Hey all,

Hope you're having a beautiful day so far :)!

I wanted to share with you a non scale victory (NSV) that I had recently that made me feel really good. My birthday falls right around Thanksgiving (I was actually born on Thanksgiving Day) so I always tend to go a bit crazy and eat more than I should.. way more than I should..

Well around that time and slightly before, my jeans were feeling tight.. I hadn't been doing so well on tracking and focusing on my health. It was very discouraging and it made me feel really sad that I could BARELY get my jeans on .. let alone the fact that my baggier jeans were not feeling so baggy anymore.

Now we're in November and I can happily say I'm back into my smaller jeans and I am thinking of finally getting rid of my baggier jeans.

I remember when it was a BIG deal that I could fit into those (once very tight) baggy jeans. Makes me smile thinking of how excited I was once to barely squeeze into them and now I want to get rid of them because they are so big they make me look frumpy. YAY!!!

What a victory!

Have a happy hump day!

Random Act of Kindness Day

Hi all,

Just a reminder that today is Random Act of Kindness Day.

What is a random act of kindness? Wikipedia describes it as a selfless act performed by a person or people wishing to either assist or cheer up an individual person or people.

I'm already thinking of some kind things I am going to do :). Here are some ideas.

Just smiling at someone can be a random act of kindness... so spread it! Pass it on :) I know I'll be smiling all day and will try to do as many nice things as possible.

Hope you all have a wonderful friday! Weekend is here! WOOHOO!

:) Steph

Oh Diet Pop, You're So Bad!

I have to admit I cringe deep down inside every time I see someone order a diet pop. I understand the addiction, I understand people think it’s “healthier”, I understand people think its a better option than regular pop.. but why? Can anyone straight out tell me why? Because there are no calories.. because there is no sugar? Think about what replaces that.

A few years ago I completely gave up pop, juice, most alcohol and anything else you could think of other than coffee and water. I quit it cold turkey and though it was hard, I felt a lot better. Now I allow myself to have smoothies and juice every now and again because its a bit of a treat and it's a lot healthier and less addictive than pop.

Some Interesting Information
  • Drinking diet pop can cause kidney function to decline and eventually cause kidney disease (chronic kidney disease may develop complications like high blood pressure, anemia, weak bones, poor nutritional health, nerve damage and heart disease).
    • This decline has not been shown in those who drank regular pop. This leads us to believe that the artificial sweeteners are responsible
  • In a study of over 10,000 people, studies have shown that consuming one can of diet pop a day can increase the risk of metabolic syndrome by 34%
    • Metabolic syndrome can be a combo of: high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels—when these occur together it increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes
  • IT DOESNT HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT!!! Artificial sweeteners can make you gain weight because they trick your body into thinking you’re consuming real sugar which makes you crave sweets more. It  can also mess with the way your body consumes natural sugars
  • The preservatives in diet pop can cause DNA damage. This one is especially scary because it can increase the risk of very, very serious health problems and diseases
These are just some of the side effects of DIET pop.. not pop all together. So if you think you’re saving calories by drinking diet, you’re likely to eat them later when you’re craving all kinds of sweet foods… or when your body just cannot metabolize sugar properly anymore. Our bodies cannot metabolize sucralose and when we continuously trick our bodies into THINKING that it is consuming sugar it will anticipate an energy boost and when it doesn’t come? You’re basically crying wolf and it would be really, really bad if your body stopped responding to actual sugar intake.

People who drink diet pop and those who drink regular pop are just as likely to be obese. So kick the crap and DRINK WATER!

Steph

Thankfully November Challenge

I was invited to participate in the Thankfully November 30 day challenge by my friend Mary and I thought I would share it with you guys! Nothing like spreading the motivation, right?

This is a 3 part challenge and you can participate in just one or two or all. I've decided to add two of them to my routine and incorporate it in with my plank challenge. The three challenges are:
The cool thing is that they have different levels of difficulty so you can scroll through the pictures to see what the options are. I chose to do the tricep and stretching challenge.

You can find the event here on facebook for rules and some images that will show you how to do the challenges. You can also read how to correctly follow and do each challenge here.

If you've decided to participate in this, let me know! I already have a few of my friends participating so this should be fun!

October's Beauty Questions Answered!

Hi all,

We've decided to add something new to the blog. Every month we will be answering a few beauty questions so you can take a peek into our lives related to all things beauty! Have a question? Either leave it directly on this post, email us (contact info is under "contact us" tab) or reach out to one of us directly!

We're sneaking in just in time for October.. so here we go!

What do you love about makeup?
S: I love the variety! There are so many different types of makeup out there! So many brands, colours, textures and products. There is literally something for everyone! So much to try, so much to review.. so much to play with! I remember a few years back Jenn and I would just hang out and do each others makeup for fun.  Plus it’s just a fun thing in general.. makes me feel like a kid again when I’m playing with it.

J: I love makeup because it can accentuate your beauty, By putting makeup in just the right areas (without adding too much) it can make your beautiful features shine and stand out. I am forever grateful for foundations, due to my continuous struggle with my complexion.

Cream, Powder, or Stain Blush?
S: Normally I would say Powder but I’ve been on a cream blush kick for the last few months. I really enjoy it the way that it applies when using a stippling brush and the type I have really make me glow!

J: It all depends on where I’m going and what look I’m going for, I use both cream and powder blushes. If I want a dewy look I wear cream blush and if I want a more matted look I wear powder.

What is your natural hair texture? Do you work it or do you change it?
S: I haven’t dyed or changed the colour in about 3 years. It’s naturally dark brown, slightly fine but I have a ton of it! I recently cut it into a bob after trying to grow it out for a few years. It just got to a point where it felt so limp when I tried to put it up. Nothing fun  about that. I feel that is the best way to work it as it gives it more life, volume and looks healthier. Also, it makes it nicer to wake up and my hair looks done already :). My hair is straight most of the time but sometimes wavy when it feels like being daring.

J: My natural hair has a slight wave and I consider it to be medium-thick, without dye it’s a dark ash-blonde. I absolutely love colouring my hair, even though sometimes I wish I could see what my natural colour would look like on me again because it has been such a long time. Currently my hair is the longest it’s ever been, and I love it! Current colour is medium brown.

Describe your beauty routine in 11 words or less.
S: Simple, quick and easy. Natural looks are always better!
J: Cleanse, exfoliate, tone, moisturize, cover, conceal, highlight, and accentuate.

Thanks for reading and if you have a question please feel free to communicate it to one of us or comment below.

30 Day Plank Challenge

Hi all,

Once again we have decided to do another 30 day challenge together!  Having each other for encouragement and motivation is fantastic and really works for us.. we both would highly recommend it if you find you are struggling.  We started this challenge on Wednesday which would make today day 6.

Using proper form is extremely important, please click on this video for a demonstration and some eye candy. ;o)

Planking is an incredible exercise because it works out pretty much every single muscle in the body and is a great way to keep your back and spine healthy. Plus you can do it from the comfort of your own home! Got excuses? This is a no-excuses-tolerated workout! Watching TV? Get on the floor and plank it out for a bit! Practice makes perfect so if it’s hard at first don’t give up. Just keep trying because once you build those muscles you’ll be able to plank for longer and will see results!

Today is our first rest day, here are our thoughts so far.

Jenn: I found the above picture circulating the internet, and seeing what muscles are being worked while doing a plank motivates me a lot. I want these areas strengthened because they are my weak areas. To be honest, this is my first time planking. I am excited to try something different, but nervous at the same time.

My whole body was shaking during my very first plank, I struggled feeling like my body was being pulled down. I felt uneasy about the upcoming days where I would have to hold a plank position for longer and longer. To my surprise, I now can hold a planking position without shaking until around 15 seconds. That’s a huge improvement for me, in a mere 5 days. I am feeling very excited now and motivated to see how this goes, and I love the feeling of growing stronger. My lower core muscles are the sorest muscle right now from doing this challenge.

Steph: I have to be honest, when I first considered doing this challenge I definitely had no idea what I was getting myself into. Planking is HARD! “20 seconds!?” I thought.. “easy peasy!”. Let me tell you, it is not easy peasy. I always feel like my upper body strength and core area need improvement so this was perfect.

Day 1 was hard.. my body shook SO much and I had to break halfway through. That’s right.. I couldn’t even do 10 seconds. “Great.. this is going to go well!” Next day I could do it without a break.. same with the next day.. and the next day. I needed my next break at 40 seconds (only because my foot was bothering me alot). I think this will go similarly to the squat challenge and it will get gradually easier as I go on. I also like that I’m able to split it up throughout the day .. so taking a break doesn’t really bug me. I’m excited to see how this goes and see how my upper body strength improves. I’ll keep you guys in the loop  :P

Thanks for reading and let us know if you decide to join in!

Nestle Gerber Graduates - Toddler Supplement Drink

As your little one turns into a toddler they may start to develop picky eating habits, or choose to not eat at all. This is my current struggle with my 1 ½ year old boy, he would much rather run around and play or chew the food and spit it out. I have tried many different types of foods to give him variety and I try to make food as fun as possible, some days it works and others just don’t. After researching different supplements for children I quickly realized there was not much available for children under the age of 2. So after much more searching I found the new Nestle Graduates Toddler Drink, this is something that will give my child added nutrients and can put my mind at ease.

This supplement comes in a can that retails for approximately $20-25, I purchased mine from Shoppers Drug Mart (during a 20x the points event ;oD). I checked a couple grocery stores in the area and they did not carry it yet. The drink is in powder form and comes with a scoop, and is only sold in Vanilla flavour. This is made for children between the ages of 1-3 years old. The price is very good considering another competitor Pediasure (which I haven't tried yet). Per one can yields approximately 25 servings.

With much excitement I prepared the drink according to instructions, mixing together only water and the scoops of powder. I gave this to my little guy and he absolutely hated it, very disappointing. I gave it a try and I don’t blame him, it tastes disgusting. This is where I get creative! Instead of using only water to mix the drink I decided to try mixing half milk and half water, this helped a lot with the taste. My little guy actually drank a few sips! Wu-hu, I’m onto something! I have some strawberry nesquik in the fridge and decided to add just a little to this drink to see if he’d take it. Sure enough he gulped the whole thing down! Ahhhhhh sweet bliss, I felt very relieved that he drank the whole drink. I can get peace of mind knowing that he’s getting nutrients even with a little squirt of strawberry nesquik to get down. Some people might disagree with adding this to the drink because of the sugar content but seriously this works for us. Plus, there is no harm using a little strawberry syrup. It makes me feel better because I know he’s drinking the whole drink and getting nutrients when he’s having one of those days where he doesn’t want to eat. Maybe doing this mixture for your little one will help them and you! You could also try adding it to a fruit smoothie.

Here is a link to give you all the information about this product.

Wantable Beauty Box Review

Hey all,

So about 2 weeks ago on Reddit I saw a post on Reddit from Stuart from Wantable. He was inquiring to see if anyone with a beauty blog would be interested in reviewing one of their beauty boxes. Well, you all know how much I love beauty boxes and anything beauty related so I jumped right on it! Plus, all my close friends know I've been debating signing up for awhile. So this was perfect! That very same day they had arranged to send me a box. So quick (and it also only took 10 days to arrive from that day)! Stuart frequents Reddit quite often which I think is great. Customer service is a BIG DEAL in the beauty box industry and if you screw up a couple times you’re bound to lose a few customers. I haven’t seen many issues with Wantable at all. What I have seen is them going above and beyond for their customers.

Wantable offers a couple different types of beauty boxes which include makeup, accessories, intimates and a limited time Halloween box. All of which are HIGHLY customizable as there is a very in-depth beauty profile that you fill out. I of course decided to try out the make up box and in it you will receive 4-6 FULL SIZED items! Yes, that’s right. Full size speciality and premium brands. If you live in the US you’re able to get the box for a one time fee of $40 or for a monthly subscription of $36. If you’re from Canada you need to add about $10 to include taxes and shipping/duties. Kinda sucks having to pay extra.. but whatever. The benefit is that you are able to skip a month whenever you choose. That works for me! Also, guess what? If you don’t like your box. You can send it back for a FULL refund.

My ultimate dance worthy moment? It fit into my mailbox!!! I don't have to go to the mall to pick it up at Canada Post. So now that I've told you about the company, I am going to tell you about what I have received in my complimentary box. Here is a list of the products that I received:

  • Susan Posnick- Color Eye Define Eyeliner in Platinum/Gold
  • Bésame Cosmetics- Classic Colour Lipstick in Exotic Pink (C211)
  • LiseWatier- Féline Mascara HD in Ultra Black
  • Beauty For Real- The Perfect Nude Pencil
  • Skiin - Soothing & Smoothing Eye Cream (sample)

And now here are my thoughts!

Susan Posnick- Color Eye Define Eyeliner in Platinum/Gold
Retail price: $26

This product was something that is definitely different than what I am used to.. but that's the fun thing about beauty boxes! You get to try things you've never seen, heard of or even thought of trying. I didn't even realize it had two ends until a few minutes after I opened it. This product is a dual ended eye liner and shadow. The one end is a platinum coloured creamy eye liner that can also be used as an eye shadow. The other end is a self dispensing gold shadow .. Neat!. I'm not really one for colours like this as I prefer darker eye liners and don't wear many coloured eye shadows anymore. The gold end definitely worked with another gold/brown based eye shadow but I really need to rethink what to do with the eye liner as it definitely doesn't go with brown. Maybe a pretty purple or green.

This seems like a really neat brand and I'd love to see more! I'd even like to try this in other colours!

Rating: 4/5 - Really neat concept!

Bésame Cosmetics- Classic Colour Lipstick in Exotic Pink (C211)
Retail price: $22

Steph: I was really excited to receive this product as I've seen a few of Besame's products and have been really blown away by the gorgeous packaging. It arrived in a red velvet bag that I plan to keep the lipstick in while it is inside my purse. The lipstick case itself is gold with red writing and shaped like a bullet (pictured above). The colour I received was called "exotic pink" and boy was it ever! I think my boyfriend even called it exotic and vibrant. It's very pink and very long lasting. It lasted for a few hours! Pete even asked me if I had reapplied because it was still as bright as when I first put it on. That's a good sign for a long wearing lipstick. I did apply a good 2 coats though. The shape of this lipstick is quite different which you can see in the picture.. but it made it a lot easier to have straight lines during the application process. I really liked this and will be using it! I wish the colour was more a bit less "bright" as we're entering a colder season. I'll still make it work.

Rating: 5/5

Jenn: The packaging and presentation of this lipstick is stunningly beautiful. It came in a beautiful small dark red velvet bag, and the actual lipstick is in a gold metal type standard shaped lipstick applicator. The shape of the lipstick is definitely out of the ordinary, it is slanted on both sides coming to a point in the center instead of the standard slanted tip on one side. I love it because I was able to use the tip to really define my lips. The colour is beautiful but definitely to dark for me to wear daily. Application of this lipstick is beautiful, but did transfer easily therefore not a long wearing lipstick (which I prefer). I do like this product and would purchase, but in a shade lighter.

Rating: 5/5

Overall: 5/5 Would definitely buy/try again!!

Lise Watier- Féline Mascara HD in Ultra Black
Retail Price: $23

This product really made me excited when I saw it in my beauty box. I love Lise Watier and its great to see a Canadian brand featured in the mix. Sadly I was a bit disappointed when I decided to test it. Let me start by saying I gave this one three chances to wow me. When I first applied it I said "WOW!" because it was SO dramatic.. but my lashes looked so clumped together :(. I figured it was a problem with application but the same thing happened the next day. But this time I had to completely start over as it ruined my eye makeup. Oh well... 3rd times a charm! I brushed and separated all my lashed before hand and the first application went on wonderfully! 2nd eye? Of course I'd fudge it up!  I was able to fix it with my eyelash brush but it didn't work well. When I get my subscription I will just say I dislike receiving mascara because I find it so hard to actually find one I like. It's not horrible... but I have too many great quality mascaras to keep this one in my rotation.

Sidenote: removal was incredibly hard. I used TONS of eyemake up remover before I washed my face, after I washed my face and then woke up with it still under my eyes.

Rating: 2/5 Probably would not recommend. I expected more from this great brand.

Beauty For Real- The Perfect Nude Pencil
Retail price: $14

The one thing I've always wanted to receive in a beauty box! Lip pencil is not something I've ever wanted to buy.. but it is something I've wanted to try. Man I need major improvement when it comes to drawing straight clean lines. I really did NOT get it right the first or second time I tried. The second time  it definitely looked more brown on my lips but maybe it's because I tried too hard and put too much on? I think I need better practice but I'm happy to have received one!

Rating: 3/5

Skiin - Soothing & Smoothing Eye Cream (sample)

So I only started using eye cream last week and have since really enjoyed it. This one made my skin feel great however it smelled kinda gross when applying it. I'll definitely use the whole sample and see if I can see myself using this one instead of the other one I got in a sephora kit for my birthday.

Rating: 4/5

Overall Thoughts
This box was by far the best box I've ever received from any beauty box company. It's a tad more expensive than I'd normally choose to pay but the product size and quality is just SO worth it. I will definitely be signing up shortly and will fix my profile based on this first box. They also couldn't have picked a better time to do this as I needed some SERIOUS cheering up.

I'd like to thank Wantable for sending me this complimentary box to review! You guys rock!

Hope you all have a great day,

Steph

30 Day Squat Challenge Complete!

Hi all,

You may have seen that we started a 30 day squat challenge back in September. Well we are done and here are our thoughts!

Steph: Wow! I can’t believe it’s been 30 days already. I also can’t believe I made it to 250 squats! I remember thinking that doing just 20 in a row was hard.. now I can do 200 in a row! The difference a few weeks can make :). I feel stronger in so many different ways.
One of the biggest improvements I noticed was that my butt was lifted! Yay! I’ve been told I have a flat behind in the past so having a booty makes me happy. I also feel like my lower back looks a lot better as well. Another major improvement I noticed was how much harder and muscular my thighs were. It really toned them up!

Considering squats are said to be one of the most beneficial exercises out there I will be incorporating them into my routine. I will be trying to do squats every other day from this point forward. I’ve seen the benefits after 30 days.. I wonder what I’ll see after 60 or 90 days?

Jenn: I am so happy that the squat challenge has come to an end! Since this is my second time doing the challenge I feel even stronger and would consider doing this challenge a third time. I love how my saddlebags are smaller and I have noticed toning in my knees. I also managed to drop 4lbs while doing this challenge along with improving my healthy eating choices. Yay!!

Hard to believe how strong this exercise makes me feel. I feel AMAZING! I recommend this challenge to everyone, I know you can do it!!! Many people looked at me in shock when I told them what I had accomplished that day. If I can do it, so can you!

Thank you so much for reading, for your generous feedback as well as supporting us both throughout this challenge.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Questions to Ask Yourself

As you may have read before in a previous post I have decided to do a series of blogs related to Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Today I wanted to put a few questions out there that I really wish someone had asked me 4-5 years ago. I feel weird calling myself a survivor.. I hate being thought of as the victim. It is what it is.. but I am no longer ashamed. Please ask yourself/or a friend these questions if you are concerned about Domestic Abuse. Don't disregard the answers.

Do they try to control you by telling you what to wear, say or do?
Do they tell you who you can hang out with or be friends with?
Do they call you names and embarrass you in front of others?
Do they pressure you or force you to engage in sexual acts against your will?
Do they try to shame you, damage your self-worth, criticize you or call you names?
Do they tell you nobody else will want you as a way to force you to stay in relationship?
Do they make you feel like it’s your fault that the relationship is difficult?
Do they tease you, use sarcasm as a way to put you down or degrade you?
Do they tell you that your opinion or feelings are “wrong or regularly ridicule, dismiss, disregard your opinions, thoughts, suggestions, and feelings?
Do you feel you must “get permission” before going somewhere or before making even small decisions?
Do they remind you of your shortcomings?
Do they belittle your accomplishments, your aspirations, your plans or even who you are?
Do they have trouble apologizing?
Do they not notice or care how you feel?

Please remember that there is ALWAYS a way out and you do not need to live with the abuse. It doesn't matter if it is physical, emotional, sexual, financial or any type... it is never okay. Never.

If there is an emergency and you are afraid for your life please call 911.

You can also call the assaulted women's hotline which is available 24 hours a day: Toll-free: 1-866-863-0511

You can also call legal aid to see what services are available to you: 1-800-668-8258

To locate services in your area you can call the victims support line: 1-888-579-2888

Please do not be afraid to get help.

September Ipsy Bag Review

Another month.. another beauty bag!

I had a bit of an issue with this month's Ipsy bag. I was extremely excited to get it and was frequently checking the tracking code to see when it would be delivered. Well it was delivered... except to a different city. I was kind of upset but figured I'd give it a few days to arrive. It never did. I decided to email them and within a few days they replied and sent out a new bag.

Thankfully I received it but it was super late and my excitement had quickly gone away. So that's why I am posting this in October :P.

Anyways.. here is what I got in this month's Ipsy Bag:

Elizabeth Mott- It's So Big Volumizing Mascara
Shade: Black

How many mascaras does Ipsy think we need. Two months in a row? I decided to give this one a shot as I'd seen many mixed reviews from other ipsters. I was actually surprised at how much I liked it! It doesn't compare even in the slightest to my two usual mascaras (Lashblast Fusion and Buxom Lash) but it wasn't bad. I have naturally long lashes but this added even more length! It applied smoothly, separated and didn't clump my lashes but I do have a specific brush that I prefer whereas this one is shaped more like an hourglass and is very bendy (which I do not like). Can't complain too much other than to say that it did not hold a curl that well.. which happens with almost every mascara I try. Damn thick lashes!

I will definitely be keeping this in my rotation.

Rating: 3.5/5

NYX:  Eye Shadow
Shade: es32 Purple

Steph's Review: I am a big fan of NYX eye shadows in general as I find they apply so nicely and most of the time have a very velvety feel to them. I've even often compared the texture to Urban Decay. This shade however was just not for me. I do enjoy purple eye shadow but this shade was just too close to pink and too sheer. Just not for me, sadly. I really enjoy pigmented shades and don't generally use sheer colours. The other colours were so pretty and I was rather disappointed... oh well. A lot of other ipsters felt the same way about this colour in general on the review page. I have enough eye shadow anyway :)

Rating: 1/5

Jenn's Review: I really love this shade, the pigment is light and sheer but the colour is build able. There is not a lot of shimmer which I really like. I have other NYX shadows and they are all really blend-able and last. I typically always get creasing with eye shadows and this one doesn't crease badly, I still recommend wearing an eye shadow primer to last all day.

Rating: 4/5

Overall: 2.5/5

Starlooks: Kohl Eye Pencil

Shade: Obsidan

Steph's Review:  This was actually a nice eye pencil! I was surprised because all of the other eyeliners I've received in beauty boxes have been major disappointments (too glittery or not pencil.. liquid and gel scares me!). It applies in a very creamy texture which I like as it makes it easy to apply. The colour was perfect and quite dark (though all ipsters received the same colour) and it didn't smudge and lasted all day. I may have an excessive amount of eyeliner right now but will definitely be keeping this in my rotation.

Ratings: 4/5

Jenn's Review: Loved this one, it applied smoothly with ease. The colour goes on dark black, I find with other liners they aren't as pigmented, but this one was beautiful. I don't however like that it's a pencil that you need to sharpen. This did wear nicely all day and didn't smudge. Based on it being a pencil I likely won't be purchasing.

Rating: 3/5

Overall: 4/5

Freeman Beauty: Facial Paper Masks (set of 3)

Steph's Review: Who comes up with these things? Paper Mask? This was one of the more difficult masks I've ever used. I decided to try the Rose Brightening Mask and it smelled okay.. but was just so weird I didn't pay much attention to the smell. I opened the package and it dripped everywhere. Ok.. whatever I put it over the sink. Unfolding the paper mask with the liner was pretty annoying  as it didn't really unfold and the liner got stuck in weird places. I tried to put it on my face as best as possible but the eye holes and everything else just didn't fit properly. I took it off as soon as I could which was 3 minutes (recommended was 3-5). How did it feel after? Not good :(. I expected to feel refreshed and have soft skin but my skin was red and felt very dry. Maybe they set me up so I need to use the hydrating one soon?

Who knows? Will not be using again.

Rating: 0/5

Jenn's Review: Yuck! I hated it, I tried the Starfruit Purifying mask. When I opened the package the liquid inside squirted out in my eye, ouch.. So from that point on I was careful to remove it from the package. I have never used a paper mask before, and will not be trying it again. Unfolding and applying this mask was very difficult. The mask did not fit my face properly, the fragrance was pleasant but very strong. Upon application I began to feel burning, after a couple minutes the burning feeling was unbearable so I removed the mask and did not leave it on for the recommended 5-10 minutes. I face continued to burn for several minutes after removal. I do not recommend this mask to anyone.

Rating: 0/5

Overall: 0/5 would not recommend

J.Cat Beauty: Fantabulous Lipstick

Shade: Honeycrisp

Steph's Review: This was BY FAR the most ridiculous lipstick I have ever tried. It looked like I put concealer on my lips . Who wants their lips to look the exact same colour of their skin? It had a weird orange tint to it and was just awful. I actually put this on and then laughed hysterically. It just looked so funny. I can understand nude lipstick but this takes it to a whole different level.. a Halloween level. I also felt that this was very drying and made my lips look like they had flecks on them. I gave this one to Jenn to try and it looked about 50x better on her than it did on me. She has a gorgeous darker lip colour (compared to me) which allowed for her to not look completely washed out like I did.

Apparently this lipstick is available in 46 shades. Why did every single subscriber get this hideous nude colour? Not a good pick ipsy..

Rating: 0/5

Jenn's Review: I like how smooth this lipstick applied, the colour is definitely not my style but it had a nice subtle shine. I would really like to try some other colours from this brand. If you're the type of person who likes nude lips then you would love this lipstick.

Rating: 2/5

Overall: 1/5

Overall Bag Rating?: Probably 2/5. I was just not wow'd and the shipping issue didn't help.

I would say that this was not the best beauty bag experience. I wish that there was more of a surprise feel to it and that there were nicer full sized products. I really am thinking of subscribing to a better makeup bag like Wantable.

I should be getting my next box soon so watch for that in the upcoming weeks!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

As some of you may already know.. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. This is always a good time to educate people and remind them that there is help available.

There are many different types of Domestic Abuse which include: physical, sexual, emotional, financial and harassment. Though the rates of domestic violence against women have declined in Canada, no amount of abuse is ever okay. Sadly, women are now less likely to involve the police.

Here are some facts related to Domestic Violence towards women in Canada:
  • Every 6 days a woman is murdered by her partner
  • On a daily 3000 women and (2500 children) are living in a shelter to escape domestic violence
  • 12% of violent crimes in Canada are related to domestic violence (many of which do not get reported)
  • In one year 427,000 women over the age of 15 are sexually assaulted (also, many instances are not reported)
  •  83% of all domestic violence assaults are made against women
  • An estimated 360,000 children witness domestic or family violence every year
You can read more facts here.

As someone who has been directly affected by domestic violence I want you to know that there is always a way out. With strength and support you can change your life.

I will be writing a series of posts over the next month related to this topic.

Thanks for reading

Update: 30 Day Squat Challenge

Hi all,

We wanted to update you all on our 30 day squat challenge progress:

Steph: I am soooooo happy that I decided to do this challenge. I feel so much stronger and just better in general. On day 1 I found this challenge extremely hard.. I could do maybe 20 squats in a row and I honestly questioned whether or not I would be able to finish this. 250 squats in one day? How the hell was I going to do that? Now I’m up to 70 in a row!

Today is day 19 and we have to do 160 squats. I find that I usually do them while watching TV or while Pete is playing GTA V haha. I also find it makes for a much easier time if I hop on the exercise bike before and after reps. It helps to loosen things up and doesn’t make my legs as sore later.

Before I thought I wouldn’t be able to finish and now I’m thinking about how I am going to continue a squat routine once this is done. Some days I hate squats but the changes I am seeing in my body really make the pain worth it.

Jenn: I thought the second time doing this challenge might be easier. I was sort of right, it’s not as hard but still very challenging because after I was done my last squat challenge I completely stopped doing them. This time I hope to continue doing squats after this one is completed. I love how strong my legs feel! I didn’t do measurements this time but I can definitely feel my leg muscles are harder. It’s such a good feeling.

There was one day that was extremely busy for me and I wasn’t able to do my squats that day, so I ended up doing squats on what was supposed to be my rest day. I hated doing this because then I had to do 4 days straight instead of 3 before my rest day. Sometimes I find my days go by so fast, so I have been trying really hard to do my squats first thing in the morning and then I don’t have to worry about doing them before bed, and I have my evenings to relax.

I am so happy doing this with Stephie, I love her motivation!

Oh, Fall!

Finally.. the season I truly love is once again upon us. Fall!

I always, always, always look forward to fall. I am the person who loves bonfires, chilly nights, wearing hoodies and cuddling under blankets :). There is also Thanksgiving, Halloween and my birthday!

One of my favourite things is going trail walking and for long strolls with Pete and Oscar or my girls. Above is one of my favourite spots to go to which is located near Tews & Webster's Falls. You need to walk a bit but the view is amazing.

I am now able to see the colours changing throughout Waterloo and Kitchener as I have a great view from my apartment. Nothing is better in fall than seeing the leaves changing into these deep and bright beautiful shades of red, orange, yellow and sometimes purple.

I can't wait to make fresh apple baked products, caramel apples and drink apple cider. Also the football season has started and if you know me well you know that I LOVE the Steelers! Here's hoping the season gets better from here.. :S...

Fall also brings pumpkin spiced everything, hayrides and haunted houses (which you won't be seeing me at!).

Is it weird to say that fall just smells good in general?! Eh, who cares.. I'm saying it!

Enjoy this fresh season everybody! Spend time with your friends and family and make sure you take some time to enjoy life and just laugh! The year is just going toooo fast.

What are some of your favourite things to do in the fall? I'd love to hear them!

Goals for October

So on September 30th I decided that October would be the month of change. First off, it's my favourite month of the year so it seems fitting. Plus a 1 month time frame is great for measuring your goals.

Here are some of my goals:

  1. Try all classes offered by my Zumba studio including Bowka, DOWNdawg Yoga & Butts 'N' Guts
  2. Eat cleaner, healthier meals
  3. Reach my plant nanny goal every day
  4. Be more active (workouts 3+ times a week)
  5. Feel more confident and improve my attitude

I feel that these are attainable goals. I will make sure to check in with you guys at the end of the month.

If anyone is interested in attending a Zumba class with me I'd love that! Please let me know.

I will leave you with this quote I had saved on my computer in 2010 before I started my journey:

“Don't wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.- Mark Victor Hansen

5 Easy Ways To Lose Weight And Feel Great!

If you’re anything like me and many other people, we all want to find some easy things we can do to live a healthier life and lose weight. Here I list 5 of my personal top favourite ways. When I follow these easy steps I always notice a difference within the first week.

1. Absolutely no eating 4 hours before going to bed. Instead drink herbal non caffeinated teas or ice cold water. It helps when you drink something HOT or something COLD if you suddenly get the overbearing urge to snack.

2. Walking 30 minutes a day. Not only is this fantastic for your mental health it’s also great for your physical health! Get moving.

3. Tracking everything you eat. You don’t need any special program, just writing down what you’re eating even on a napkin if you have to and tossing it in the trash after. Writing down what you’re eating makes me feel accountable. There are some really helpful free tracking websites and apps for you to use. I really like MyFitnessPal.

4. Drinking the right amount of water for your weight. Use this formula to calculate how much water you should actually be drinking a day. There are many different ways of calculating how much water you should be intaking, and many different factors to consider especially in hot/humid environments, exercise plans, sickness including fever just to name a few. For the average person, I would recommend you take your body weight and multiply it by 0.5 to calculate what your daily intake of water in ounces should be. Once you have that number you can divide it by 8 to see how many cups of water you  need to be drinking.

5. Snacking on the right things. Pick the healthier option when that craving for chips or candy hits, but if that craving is overpowering (happens to all of us) take a small portion of those chips or candy and that’s it, then if you’re still craving it grab something healthy. I don’t believe in completely depriving yourself of those snack foods you love, however it’s extremely important to keep portion control in mind!

Hope these tips help you to live a healthier and happier life.

Thanks so much for reading, and have a splendid day!

App Review: Plant Nanny!

Hi all,

One thing we have both recently gotten into is an app for our iPhone called Plant Nanny. This app has majorly helped us to keep on track when it comes to water intake. The purpose of this app is to not only ensure you get your recommended water intake everyday but to also keep your cute, loveable plant alive.

Do we need a refresher on the benefits of water?

We’ve both gone through about 3 plants now and we find it fun to plant new ones and watch them as they grow/evolve. The plant will go through 4 levels until they completely evolve and you can move them over to your display and collect seeds from them. With these seeds you get to buy new and better/more difficult plants!

When you drink enough water you will see a message like this:

When you drink too much water you will see a message like the following which kind of annoying. I understand if I went 5 glasses over but they send this message when you just have one extra glass:

And for the tearjerkers.. here is what your plant will look like if you do not drink enough water. This one is kind of weird as that night Steph had changed her activity level from regular to active and instead of adjusting it from that day forward it adjusted it to to show that every single day the app had been used in the past the daily water intake was not met which made her rating drop from 4 stars down to 2. Check it out:

Doesn't that make you sad? Thankfully that sad face went away by 3pm of the same day!

Here is also a chart that tracks your water intake daily"

Overall this app is a lot of fun and really does help you to increase the amount of water you consume in a fun way! It kind of feels like a game. One thing we will say as a warning... be prepared to PEE!!

And to finish it off, here are some of our cute plants!:

This app can be purchased in the app store for 99 cents. We both don't normally buy apps but Steph put it this way..  "A chocolate bar is $2... a XL double double is $2. This $1 or $2 on a health app is going to go a LOT farther than a $2 treat" (addition now that I think of it: which will just find it's way to your ass!)

Hahahah!

Hope you decide to try out this app! It's fun, keeps you in check and you end up growing super cute plants! Let us know if/when you sign up :)

Thanks for reading,

30 Day Squat Challenge

Together we have decided to do the 30 Day Squat Challenge! There is nothing better than having your friends for motivation; we encourage you to read on and join us!
Doing a 30 day squat challenge is something almost anybody can do, and will benefit just about everyone. You start by doing 50 squats on day 1 and slowly increase to a maximum of 250 squats by day 30.

Please click on this link to watch a very helpful video that shows you proper form and technique.

Here are our thoughts on the upcoming challenge:

Jenn: This will be my second time taking on this challenge. I love the result and strength I felt by doing this. Please refer to my past posts if you’d like to read about my first experience. I am ready to start round 2! I recommend that you take your time doing the squats and do them properly, that way you will get the best results. They will hurt and burn, but it gets easier! Don’t give up.

Steph: This is my first time doing the challenge. I am a bit nervous but excited at the same time. I finished my first day of squats a few hours ago and I am still burning. A good burn :). I am excited to push myself on this challenge and see results! Plus I’m very excited to be able to do this with my best friend! She is my motivator on this one.

Get your squat on and be sure to let us know if you’ve decided to do the same so we can use  each other for support!

Another 30 Day Challenge Success!

Whoot!

I did it!!! I didn't eat any fast food for over 30 days straight. Guess what? I'm not even craving any and doubt I will eat any today because meh.. why bother? I don't need it!

The first week of this challenge was BRUTAL for me. I craved fast food every single day. If it wasn't "Mmmm I really, really, reallllly want a chicken caesar pita" it was "I should stop off at McDonalds and get some breakfast burritos." I craved pizza, shawarma.. everything. Within 2 weeks those cravings had completely gone away and I was left counting the days.

I was really struggling before and doing this not only helped me kick the habit and craving.. it helped me out financially. I wonder how much I saved by not eating out a couple times a week? Maybe around $80?

I've never understood people who ate out every single day.. so why would I become one? Here's to healthier meal decisions!

SO! I've decided to start another 30 day challenge.. TODAY! Details about that will be posted later this evening and it's an extra, extra, extra special one :). I'm a little nervous about this challenge... but with faith comes strength! Just need to believe in myself and I KNOW it will be successful.

Stay tuned!

100 Mascara Picture Reviews

You know that unsure feeling you get before buying a mascara which is quickly replaced by excitement after you purchase it? We all do. I guess its the joys of being addicted to beauty products! Plus there are SOO many!

Whenever we both decide to try out a new mascara we will research it on Google and will search for reviews and pictures of people wearing it. This has not only helped us find great mascara's but has also turned us off from buying ones that just wouldn't appeal to us.

The things the internet has helped us do, eh!?

We thought it might be a cool idea to share out this link. On this page it shows 100 mascara picture reviews. Some really shocked us and some made us think "I really need to try that one!"

Check it out!!

This might tell you what not to buy... this might tell you what TO buy.. this might do nothing for you.. but it's cool to look at!

Enjoy!

Jenn's Current Favourite Salad

Hello all,

I am obsessed with a salad right now and can’t seem to get enough. Remember it's good to change it up, eating the same foods can get boring and cause you resort to eating fast food for a change. I encourage you to try new recipes and keep your healthy meals exciting!

I use baby romaine and baby spinach, mixed together equaling 2 cups. Topped with; 2tbsp walnut pieces, 2tbsp crumbled feta cheese, 1/4 cup cucumber, 1/4 cup blueberries, and (Kraft: calorie-wise) 2tbsp creamy sesame seed dressing. YUM! Drooling just thinking about it. Adding chicken pieces is also very good. This salad is approximately 175 calories without chicken.

Enjoy!

I Think My Body Is Trying To Tell Me Something

As I mentioned in our week in review.. times have been tough on me lately. Financially, physically and especially emotionally. I’m generally a fairly healthy person and in the past was almost never sick. If I was it was a slight cold that took care of itself in a week or two.

These last two months though.. UGH!!! I’ve never been sicker.. during this time I’ve experienced:

Sinus Infection (twice)
Food poisoning (twice)
Ruptured ear drums and multiple other ear issues
Pink eye or stye
Hives or massive break out from Pacifica BB cream
Other health issue I don’t feel comfortable talking about
Currently am experiencing extreme pain my my left arm/shoulder

I feel like not only has this all set me up to feel like shit physically… but also brought me down a lot emotionally. I honestly feel like this is my bodies way of saying “get your ass in gear!”

It’s time folks. It’s time for me to listen to my body and take my health more seriously. Just because I’m feeling down doesn’t mean my body has to pay for it. I’ve done this before and I DO NOT want to balloon up to 250 lbs again. That is just not an option anymore.

I’m doing better by eating cleaner and planning ahead but I need to curb my night time snacking and focus on being more active.

Here’s to a work in progress!

Steph
