Week in Review!

Jenn: This week has been a tough one for me, Noah got sick and so did I. We’re both still fighting a bug. I did manage to get my 5 workouts despite feeling ill and exhausted, so I’m happy I did something because I normally wouldn’t have.

I’m up to 150 squats on my squat challenge!

Tracking is continuing to be an issue for me, I’m finding it really hard lately. This is definitely something I need to work on.

Steph: This week was good for me.. until the last few days. I got some pretty shitty news and have basically been eating my feelings. The beginning of the week was on point and I was consistently losing and am still down from where I was last week by more than 1lb... which feels great! I’m finding that I am making a lot of progress using My Fitness Pal and am really enjoying it!

On Friday Pete and I headed up to Kingston for a wedding and decided to stay from Friday-Monday. It was a blast and I really enjoyed being able to just chill out and hang with family and friends. Probably my favourite visit as we actually got to just relax and not feel rushed to get home :) Plus I got to hang out with a bunch of his friends and get to know them better which is always awesome.

Anyways I am back on track today and am not going to be emotionally eating anymore. Also, I’ve got some interesting blog posts coming so stay tuned!

Thanks for reading :)

Power Food: Zucchini

Hello Readers,

This week we talk about the power food Zucchini, the summer squash! There are many different recipes that use zucchini, and they contain lots of health benefits so incorporating this food into your diet is a smart idea.

Zucchini is very high in water content and low in calories as one cup sliced is only 20 calories (27 calories with skin). This is considered a “low energy food” which helps you to control your appetite and will keep you fuller for longer as the water and fiber contents are quite high. This vegetable is rich in Vitamin A & C which promote healthy skin, heart, lungs and eyes.

When selecting a zucchini you want to make sure you look for a few key things. The skin should be shiny, slightly prickly and firm. You should try to avoid zucchinis that are cut or have blemishes on the skin. Also, you want it to be no longer than 6 inches long and 2 inches around. Zucchini’s should be stored in the fridge (up to 5 days) in the crisper and should be eaten within 2 days after preparation.

A delicious easy way to prepare this squash, is slicing it up (leaving the skin on) and frying it up with just enough extra virgin olive oil so it doesn’t stick, and salt/pepper.

Did you know:
When eaten regularly before/during pregnancy, it can help prevent neural tube defects.
High in potassium.
Can grow up to two feet long.
The skin is super high in fiber... so leave it on!

Here are some ways that you can incorporate zucchini into your diet.
On pizza
Steamed
Grilled on the bbq! Yum!
Baked in bread, muffins or other desserts
Zucchini Fries, I need to try this!  http://www.health.com/health/recipe/0,,10000001831902,00.html
Pasta dishes
Stir frys

Hope you enjoyed the read and will be picking up some zucchini soon!

July Ipsy Glam Bag!

Hi all,

As you know.. I have a serious love of beauty boxes so I decided to try out Ipsy! This box costs $10 per month and the shipping charge is $4.95 if you’re from Canada. This box comes with a mix of samples and some full sized Items. Here is what I got!

Everything arrived in a neon pink, plastic makeup bag that I am now using for my cosmetics in my purse. Super cute!

This time around I have asked Jenn to include her take on some of the products. I think it’s always good to get more than one perspective :).

I’ll do the reviews in the order they are shown above.

Pop Beauty - Pouty Pop Crayon (Full Sized)

Shade: Rose Romance

Jenn’s Review: This is a nice light pink neutral shade, it goes on smooth and has a light fruity scent. It makes my lips feel so soft and smooth. I recommend applying sparingly because I found that when I put a lot on it separated. The colour is very buildable, so you can make it look sheer or heavy. The only thing I didn’t like about this product was it fell into the cracks in my lips, which I never noticed this ever happening with other lip products before. This product is non sticky and hydrating. I like the crayon packaging, when you twist the bottom the product pushes up so no sharpening is required. I would definitely recommend this to a friend, and I would like to try other shades.

Rating: 3/5

Steph’s Review: I have to admit I didn’t really like the colour off the bat as I enjoy brighter colours and pinks/reds. I wish I could have received the coral! Oh well. I agree with Jenn when she said that it separates. It made me think the texture was off and I just knew it wasn’t for me. Plus I have A LOT of lip products. Since Jenn liked this product I decided to give it to her to enjoy :)
Rating: 1/5

BH Cosmetics - California Collection Eyeshadow Sample

This mini eyeshadow set is AWESOME! I love all three colours which are Hollywood (a nice matte purple), San Francisco (a shimmy brown and gold combo.. really pretty!) and Malibu (a deeply pigmented gold). I would likely mix these with other eyeshadows and not together.. but I’m always looking for something new and fun to try :)

Rating: 4/5

Benefit- Benetint

Shade: Rose

Benetint is a rose tinted lip and cheek stain. It is said to be "kiss proof" and "smudge proof" and is supposed to give you "The sexiest flush you can get from a bottle". First off.. I opened this bottle and dropped it on the floor and lost like ½ of it which sucked :(. It was only a tiny sample though.

I have to admit.. I didn't like it(AT ALL)! I find cheek tint so hard to apply! First it took me 2-3 layers to see ANY colour and then I felt like it didn't blend very well. It looked streaky and splotchy :(. I didn't even like it as a lip tint as I found the brush was hard to line my lips with.

Would not recommend. Would not try again.

Rating: 1/5

Sexy Hair - Soy Renewal Beach Spray

Jenn’s Hair Type: Medium-Thick, frizz prone, very long, colour treated.
Steph’s Hair Type: Medium length, thin, straight/wavy, non-colour treated

Jenn’s Review: I followed the instructions and applied to damp hair and let my hair dry naturally.
This product did give me a beachy messy hair look, however the feeling of it was really not enjoyable. It made my hair feel dry, unmanageable and dirty. It also made my hair look frizzier than it would if I had let it dry naturally with nothing in it. I don’t recommend it to people with my hair type, but I do encourage people with a different hair type to give it a try.

Rating: 2/5

Steph’s Review: I actually really liked this one! This spray is supposed to make your hair feel full of body and creates an "undone" texture that is supposed to look like you've been at the beach. This product contains Argon Oil which nourishes, protects and heals damaged hair.

I found this actually DID gave me volume and texture! I also found it worked a bit like a dry shampoo in which my hair did not feel greasy at all the next day like it normally does. It also held the volume! Would likely use this on the weekend but not for work.

Rating: 4/5

Coola - Mineral Face SPF 20 Unscented Moisturizer

So I wore this outside before walking with my dog and wasn’t quite sure how I felt. It did feel like a sunscreen in a way as my face sweat A LOT more than usual. But I did like the way the skin under my eyes didn’t tingle like it normally does in the sun. I decided instead to try this under my makeup while I was at work. Still it made me sweat even though I gave it time to set (and it was cool in the morning). I continued to sweat throughout the day even though I was barely doing anything.

Probably will not use.

Rating: 2/5

There you have it! My first Ipsy glam bag.

Overall Rating: 3/5

I wasn't WOW'd and I wasn't disappointed. Hoping next bag is just as good or better :)

Week in Review!

Jenn: This week went by so fast, I managed to workout 5 times along with my squat challenge. My tracking was not perfect, definitely something I need to work on. I feel fantastic this week but I am not seeing any change on the scale yet.

Noah has been trying to walk more and more, he's doing really great. I'm very proud! We spent a lot of time walking to the park this week, the weather has been so great.

I went to the movies for the first time in a long time with my mom. We saw The Heat with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, this movie was so funny! I'll be watching it again when it comes out.

Here's to a better week of tracking and continuing on my workout challenge and squat challenge! I'm feeling very motivated and determined.

Steph: This week was good! It might not have reflected the way I wanted it to on the scale.. but there was still some progress! Last week I gained and then at the beginning of last week I gained more....  but I’ve lost most of that weight.. whoot! It feels good to feel back on track!

I’ve been working out and have been sticking to my calorie goals. It’s good! I’m still really enjoying my fitness pal.. it’s better in SOO many ways! I’ll post more about that later.

Anyways It’s been an insanely busy week and it’s not about to die down so I must go!

Jenn's Squat Challenge

Hey there my fellow readers!

I have decided on sharing in more detail with all of you this challenge I took on. I tend to carry most of my weight in my lower half and I think this is a great way to tone up. I just completed one week, and my gluteus maximus (bum cheek muscles) have never hurt like this before. My thighs are also super shaky and sore, but stronger at the same time. I am feeling empowered!

Here is the chart that I am using:
Go here to learn how to do a proper squat: http://slism.com/diet/squat-your-way.html

I found this on google images. If you are interested in starting a challenge of your own I encourage you to google the different challenges people have already made and get moving!

By doing one week of this challenge I lost ½ inch off my saddle bags! I’m very happy about this and shocked, that part of my body is definitely my biggest insecurity. I’m really excited to see what the upcoming weeks do to make my body change even more.

I’ll keep you posted!

Nailpolish: Using white to make it BRIGHT!

It’s summertime and neon nail polish is at its prime time! While I was at the local Sally’s Beauty Supply, I saw an ad suggesting to try ‘China Glaze - White on white’ under your favourite neon polish to get a more vibrant colour. So that’s exactly what I did, and I will never use my neon polishes without a white base coat ever again. Seriously!

Here is a pic, hopefully you’re able to see the differences. It definitely makes the colour bright and vibrant. I just LOVE it!

Colours used: China Glaze - White on White & Pool Party

The picture without the white as a base coat has two coats. The one with has one coat white and two coats pool party.

Week in Review

Steph: Hey all, this week was just okay for me. I am still struggling with my snacking but am going to work on just that this week. That will be my biggest focus and I WILL overcome it :).

As you may have read earlier.. I finished my 30 day challenge which feels amazing! I am glad I did it and I feel sooo much better now. Thanks for all of the encouragement :).

I have lots to share with you in the coming weeks and you will be seeing a lot of makeup and beauty box reviews coming from me :). Stay tuned!

Jenn: I have been in a rut lately, and after talking with Stephie for some motivation I have been doing really good since Monday. We discussed things I could do to make sure my goals are completed, I’m going to try scheduling everything. I started my 30 day workout challenge again, because I failed terribly at my last attempt. I am promising myself to work out 5/7 days of the week. I am also doing a 30 day squat challenge. I’ll be sure to keep you all posted with updates.

Thanks for reading, and stay tuned!

30 Day Challenge COMPLETE!!!

Hi all,

On Friday I completed my 30 day workout challenge and I have to say that I feel great! Working out can give you such an amazing feeling of accomplishment!

This one really worked for me and I genuinely looked forward to working out most days. This past month we have experienced some of the hottest temperatures I've felt in a long time. Did this make me quit? NOPE! I made do with what I had and when it was too hot to go outside I ran up and down the stairwell and finished up in my apartment.

Have I noticed any changes since Day 1?
Big time! My love of working out is back! I remember my first day of the challenge.. I REALLY dreaded the workout and did not want to do it. I kept pushing it back until I finally said "Screw it.. I'm doing it NOW!".

I also feel like I can go longer and harder. I've been pushing myself to my limits! Now instead of finishing a workout and saying "I feel like death" I say "That felt freaking amazing!!! Let's go again!!!'

Anyways..

Just wanted to let you all know I completed my goal and I feel great. Also, remember it only takes a single second to decide you want to try your own 30 day challenge. First week might be tough but once you start a routine you're bound to succeed!

Don't give up peeps!

Steph

Motivation Monday!

Think on that one for a bit..

Power Food: Nectarine!

Hi all,

This time we have chosen the power food Nectarine to feature in our post. One so delicious in flavour and smell! I don’t know about you but when summer comes these are one of the first fruits I grab! So juicy and sweet.. an absolute MUST HAVE!!

A lot of times Nectarines are thought of as peaches without a beard. They are from the same family! Nectarines are supposed to be much sweeter though.  The most beneficial aspect of this fruit is that it contains antioxidants. When eaten, your body converts the antioxidants into Vitamin A which is one vitamin your body can’t get enough of! One single nectarine contains 20% of the recommended daily intake of Vitamin A. You NEED Vitamin A and if you aren’t getting enough it can be detrimental to your health and can affect bone development, reproductive disorders and in serious circumstances can cause death.  You should also know that Vitamin A is critical to your eyesight. Nectarines are also a great source of Vitamin C.

If you’re like us and enjoy majority of fruits with the skin left on you’ll appreciate the fact that the peel of a nectarine is VERY rich in bioflavonoids (antioxidants found in plant pigment that fight off cancer and other diseases by fighting against the damage that has already occurred) and is also rich in carotenoids.

Fun facts:

Nectarines get their name from the Greek god Nekter. Did you know that Necter was the drink of the greek gods?
Only contains 50-60 calories and are naturally fat free
Need to poop? Eat a nectarine!
When you take the skin off the nectarine will darken. This will not affect the taste or nutritional value.
Eating nectarines produce antioxidants that protect the skin against UV rays
Fruits and Veggies that are bright red, orange and yellow in colour are likely to  contain Beta-Carotone -- which allows your body to produce Vitamin A.

Nectarines are delicious served on their own, but here are some other great ways to eat them.

Topped on ice cream or frozen yogurt
In fruit salad and vegetable salad
Dipped in chocolate
Made into jam
Many dessert options
Baked

Yum! Hope you pick some up soon!

Week in Review!

Jenn: Another week has past? Holy! Time is going way to fast lately.
I haven't been tracking but I have been eating well. I know if I had tracked the food I ate my weight would be down even more. Tracking and keeping within your daily allowance is really important for success.
I am having a hard time doing 5 workouts a week right now. My life has been ridiculously busy lately and honestly I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. I look forward to things hopefully slowing down soon. This week I did do three very significant workouts, and I'm still super sore! So I'm happy about that.
I miss blogging and will be back at it soon, it is something I do for ME and I really enjoy it!
Steph: This week was aweeeeeeeeeeeesome!! I feel amazing. I started off really, really strong.. then the weekend came and I got off track again. I told myself on Monday that just because I had two bad days I wasn’t going to derail myself. I got right back on track!! Boy am I glad I did!
I am down 3.1 lbs this week!! yay!
I am currently on day 28 of my 30 day challenge and I feel like I rocked it. I went to Zumba on Monday and pushed myself to the limit. At times I felt like I was going to fall over but I never quit.. I still gave it 150%! It paid off because the instructor called out to me THREE TIMES!!! “WHHHHHHHHOOOOWEEEE I SEE YOU!!! GO GIRL!!!” or would point and me and go “YEAH!!!”. Who knew shaking your ass could get someone so excited? haha
I’ve also decided to make a major, major change to my weight loss. I’ve decided to start using MyFitnessPal. So far I like it A LOT better than Weight Watchers. It’s also got me completely on track and since I joined on Monday I have lost 3.2 LBS... thats right.. I lost more with MFP in 2 days than in 1 week with WW.
I will keep you updated on my progress :).

I'll never quit!!

Week in Review

Jenn: This week was nice, I lost 1lb. Whoot! It was my first week on 'my fitness pal' and I'm really liking this form of tracking. I encourage you to check it out, plus it's free so why not? I told myself I was going to do 5 workouts a week. Well I managed to do 4/5, so not bad but I didn't meet my initial goal. I still feel really good about the 4 workouts I did.

I mentioned putting reminders in the open around my house to help me stay on track and remember my goals. I have officially done it this morning.

Stephie and I went on a beautiful trail walk on Canada day. I look forward to many more! I love trail walking. I brought my dog Ace and he really enjoyed himself too.

I'm looking forward to continuing on this plan. I feel so healthy and good! Losing a pound a week makes me super happy.

Steph: This week wasn’t so good for me. I failed to track for the majority of the week :(. I’ve decided this week I am going to plan two days in advance. I already have all of Thursday planned out :). Gotta turn a negative into a positive!

I am officially 3 weeks into my workout challenge and I’m feeling great :)! So motivated to workout and I am LOVING it :)!

Anyways.. can it be friday yet?! lol Sometimes I find short weeks seem longer than they are.
Time to go!

Have a lovely week ladies!!
