October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

As some of you may already know.. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. This is always a good time to educate people and remind them that there is help available.

There are many different types of Domestic Abuse which include: physical, sexual, emotional, financial and harassment. Though the rates of domestic violence against women have declined in Canada, no amount of abuse is ever okay. Sadly, women are now less likely to involve the police.

Here are some facts related to Domestic Violence towards women in Canada:
  • Every 6 days a woman is murdered by her partner
  • On a daily 3000 women and (2500 children) are living in a shelter to escape domestic violence
  • 12% of violent crimes in Canada are related to domestic violence (many of which do not get reported)
  • In one year 427,000 women over the age of 15 are sexually assaulted (also, many instances are not reported)
  •  83% of all domestic violence assaults are made against women
  • An estimated 360,000 children witness domestic or family violence every year
You can read more facts here.
