Power Food: Spinach

Hey all,

Spinach is the food we will be focusing on today. This power food is not just for Popeye!! This leafy green is pleasing to the eye and also packed full of nutrients. Spinach can possibly help with inflammatory issues, cardiovascular problems, and bone issues.

Did you know the following facts about spinach?
  • It is a great source for potassium! A half cup of cooked spinach has 419.5 mg compared to the popular source banana being only 269 mg per half cup.
    • This means it is ideal for those with high blood pressure.
  • Baby and regular spinach pack the same amount of nutrients.
  • Spinach can be added to pasta for an added kick and tastes amazing! You can also lay this under your noodles, on top and then under the sauce.. so many ways.
  • Dark greens (like spinach and others) are great for your skin, hair and bones.
  • High in fiber! It will help you stay regular. Who doesn't love that?
  • Great source of protein and iron.
  • Excellent source of Beta-Carotene which our body converts into Vitamin A.
Preparation of this leafy green is very versatile. It can be eaten raw or cooked! You can also trick children easily into eating this healthy green by blending it into a smoothie, or chopping it up small and baking with it either in a meatloaf, dessert, or in a dip just to name a few.

Spinach is a great power food to keep around the house because there are so many ways that you can use it! Keep this healthy food in your house and not only can you enjoy eating it you can feel good about making the healthy choice every time you reach for it

Until next time!

Weekly Goals

Ahhh! Can you believe there is only one month left of summer? Time is FLYING!

We're here with new goals and an update so let's get right to it!

Steph: My goals last week would be considered successful. I found that pre-tracking 2 days in advance really helped me to stay on track and feel motivated but also felt a bit excessive.  Here are my goals for this week..

1. Track one day in advance. I felt this was a huge help for me but would be easier to do one day in advance while still being helpful.

2. All green on my fitbit!

3. This one is a bit different but going to bed by 12:15AM on Sunday-Thursday.

Jenn: After setting no goals last week I am feel super motivated to set some this week.

1. No snacking past 9pm.

2. Tracking everything in my fitness pal.

3. All green on my Fitbit.

Thanks so much for reading!

Weekly Goals

Hey folks!

Hope your weekend was amazing and that you got to enjoy the warm weather :).

I have to admit my goals last week weren't great but I was pretty active so I'm still pretty proud of myself. I also bought a battery for my scale so treating today as a fresh start and going to strive to achieve my goals.

Here they are:

1. Stay as focused on possible as weight watchers. Including using all of their tracking devices in the app
2. Being active at least 4 days this week for 30+ mins each time
3. Tracking my main meals at least 2 days in advance :)

The last one may seem a bit odd but it will help me to stay on track, not eat out and also keep track of what is in my kitchen :).

If you're setting goals this week I'd love to hear them! I'm also going to be setting a new 30 day challenge realllly soon so stay tuned!

Have a great week and don't forget to believe in yourself! You got this ;)!

Weekly Goals

Hey all,

Just checking in with our weekly goals. Here they are:

Jenn: This week was a flop! Both children got sick and I got sick. I managed to keep up with my 30 day challenge, but did not accomplish my other goals that I had set.

I am still feeling a lot of congestion and fatigue but I do have some new goals for this week and I'm so excited about them.
1. I am going to make 2/3 meals using the Paleo diet guidelines.
2. No snacking past 9pm.
3. Sticking with my 30 day challenge.

Steph: This week was a bit hard as I was on vacation and there was so much temptation. We also went out for some amazing dinners and just couldn't resist. I did end up having breakfast almost every single day though. I have also been keeping up with my steps so I'm also happy with that :).

Here are my goals for next week:

1. Keeping up with my Fitbit 12,500 all green challenge
2. Tracking all of my foods before eating them
3. Getting at least four 30+ minute workouts in

Looking forward to the next week and also looking forward to checking in next week with a successful goal check!

Have a good some and good luck with your own personal goals!!

Weekly Goals!

Hey all,

Hope you're all enjoying this fabulous long weekend we're having. Can you say aaahhhhamazing weather!??! Wowza!

Anyways we're back this week with our goal review as well as some new goals for the week. Let's get right to it!:

Steph

The past week was mediocre at best. I'd say I'm 50% with Plant Nanny (I know I drink the water but I forget to track it), fruit with breakfast.. ehh when I actually ate breakfast and I ended up going to the gym 4 times this week so I'm still considering it a win as I'm still here back for another week. So put the past behind us and move forward with a new start and a fresh mind!

Goals for the week:

1. All Green and 12,500 steps every day
2. Staying on track while still allowing myself to enjoy my vacation (and anniversary .. 4 years!)
3. Eating breakfast everyday! (I've been struggling with that big time lately)

Jenn:

Last weeks goals were not perfect but I feel happy with how I did. I only had bread once and didnt crave it at all, which is a big difference from my first time removing bread from my diet for the week. I have been having the same forgetfulness with tracking my water on Plant Nanny as Steph, but I am happy with my intake increasing. I have also set my 30 day challenge and started it on August 1st.

Goals for the week:

1. I have been given a really nice wooden bed set for my sons room, it is gently used and my goal this week is to refinish it and get it moved out of the garage and into his room.
2. 12,500 steps or more every day.
3. Track, track, track!!! Everything must be accounted for in my food diary.

Thanks so much for reading!

Weekly Goals

Hi all,

This weeks goals will hopefully motivate you and also help keep us motivated and accountable. Please feel free to share your goals with us in the comments.

Steph: goals were pretty successful last week! I've drastically increased my fruit consumption this week and I'm loving all the fresh produce in the fridge. My fitbit crapped out on me last week but I have a replacement now and have been going hard regardless! Here's to another good week ahead!

Here are my goals:

1. Using plant nanny to ensure I'm consuming the correct amount of water everyday.
2. Fruit with breakfast every day.
3. Going to the gym minimum 4 times this week.

Whoot! I got this!

Jenn: I didn't stick to my goals last week like I had intended to, not going to let it bring me down. This week I am setting some new goals, and feeling motivated.

1. Using my water tracker (Plant Nanny) and drinking the right amount of water per day.
2. No bread, removing bread from my diet on week one back on setting goals made a big difference, so I want to do it again.
3. Deciding on a 30 day challenge to start Aug 1st, stay tuned!

Thanks for reading, and have a wonderful week.

I rejoined Weight Watchers!

Hey folks!

I have some fun and exciting news! I joined weight watchers on Wednesday. Feeling super motivated and happy about it!  I’m really thinking this will be the change I need to get my arse back on track and start dropping some poundage.

So what brought me back? On Tuesday my friend Dani messaged me about it asking me if I was still on it and I mentioned I had been thinking about joining it. We decided to do it together and be eachothers support! I'm really ready for this lifestyle change and am seeing some of the changes I initially made the first time doing WW this round as well. My first goal is to lose 27 lbs.

Thanks so much for the push hun!

So many fun new features and the app is awesome! I’m already down 3 lbs :D!

Supportive friends are whats up!

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Goals

Hi Readers!

We are back again this week with some goals. Will you be setting some goals?

Jenn: I had a great first week back setting goals. My bread cravings were awful, but subsided by Wednesday. It was a very liberating feeling! My week was not perfect but I made some drastic changes and it showed on the scale, I lost 5lbs.

This weeks goals are as follows:

1. Stay within my caloric allowance on myfitnesspal.
2. Increase my water intake and use my plant nanny strictly.
3. No pasta.

Steph: My goals this week weren't 100% but I wouldn't say I failed as I'm back here again this week! I started off strong but.. weekends are hard as I always tend to go hard M-F and then come the weekend I relax. I had a few slip ups but I'm here to keep on pushing into this week!

Here are my goals:

1. 12500 daily steps and all green, baby! Yeah!
2. Tracking everything I eat before I eat it.
3. Eating at least 5-6 fruits/veggies every day.

Thanks for reading!

Just say "No!" and make better choices

It's important to have your own back, to be your biggest supporter and to believe in yourself.

Sometimes it's really hard to stick to your goals and to make the healthy changes and choices in your life. It's so (soo!!) easy to say you're going to make changes and then revert back to old ways.

The other day I walked through the grocery store and I went down the bulk food aisle looking for a large tub of cashews (to make granola). The entire time all I could think of was how badly I wanted to eat the black licorice allsorts. Did you know what I did instead of picking up any candy or filling any bags full of junk while normally thinking "I'll just get a little bit this time"? I repeated in my head while walking down the entire aisle "lifestyle change, lifestyle change, lifestyle change, lifestyle change".

The only person who's going to do this is me and if I want to get this done I need to stop giving myself an inch and taking a mile. I need to have that will power to just say no.

No more junk food
No more bad snacks
No more saying I'll portion out and then eat it all in one sitting

Just NO! If the food is not there I will not eat it. Change comes from within and if you're going to talk the talk make sure you walk the walk.

This week I set my goals and I worked hard to stick to them. I didn't do so 100% but it's better than NOT trying at all.

I took steps to help myself get to where I needed to be. I preplanned, I pretracked and I even made myself a fruit tray so I could easily grab healthier snacks while staring into the fridge.

I have a long way to go but every step, no matter how big or how small, really helps!

Keep up the good fight!

Believe in yourself!

Weekly Goals

Hello fabulous readers,

We're going to be starting our weekly goals back up again. We had been doing them here and there throughout the last little bit but now we want to set it in stone, do it weekly, and keep you all involved!

So here are our weekly goals (starting today):

Steph:

1. I'm going to do my Fitbit 12,500 step and all green challenge. This is where I reach my step goal every day as well as hitting my active minutes (30), calories burned (2,500), distance (5 miles) goals. I'm going to push this into the weekend as usually I've been going hard M-F and then resting on weekends.
2. No snacking past 9 pm except for fruits and vegetables!
3. Pre-tracking everything I eat. It really doesn't take that much time and I find I am 150% more accountable and prone to make better decisions when I see the "400 calorie" ice cream sundae nutritional information BEFORE I shove it into my face in a timespan of 5 minutes.
4. Breakfast every morning! No excuses!!
5. A more personal type of goal- scheduling my time better! No more excuses of laziness to not work out or study.

Jenn:
1. I will also be doing the Fitbit all green challenge.
2. Not eating any bread all week.
3. Staying within Myfitnesspal calorie intake goal

Do you have any goals for yourself this week?

Thanks for reading,

Steph & Jenn

Happy National Best Friend Day!!

Hey all,

Today I'd like to dedicate this blog post to my blogging partner, my partner in crime, my secret agent, my best friend.. Jenn.

I'm not sure if you're aware but today is National Best Friend Day! I am lucky enough to actually have the best friend in the history of the world. Jenn is the only person who knows what to say to cheer me up, make me feel better and can understand exactly how I'm feeling without me needing to say a single word. She truly understands me like no other and I'm not kidding when I say we have our own non-verbal body language. She can read me like a book! We also have our own language thanks to autocomplete!

When I first met Jenn I knew we'd be friends for a long time as we instantly connected. Since that moment we were inseparable. She'd meet me at my locker in the morning, we'd have lunch together every single day and sit outside while tanning our legs, pass insane amounts of notes during classes, have sleepovers every weekend, gossip about boys.. her family was my family... my family was hers. We were as close as two friends could be. Now it's dinner outings, shopping trips and gym dates! Nothing has changed in our friendship though... we're still goofy as hell, have insane amounts of fun while doing nothing and can tell each other every single detail of everything in our lives without fear of judgement or embarrassment. I'm pretty sure Jenn knows every single detail of my life down to the VERY nitty gritty!

Not only is she the best friend on this planet but she has given me the greatest gift of being auntie to two incredible children that I love more than life. She is a fabulous mother and both of her sons are truly amazing :).

We have so many amazing stories and inside jokes it would take me years to tell them all.. our ridiculous web cam times, ratemypoo.com, ALL OF THE BOYS, busy hands, bonfires, long walks, ramfest, waffles, secret agent stories, staring at the stars, creepy sleepovers, sooo many concerts, singing like maniacs in the car, shopping (sooo much shopping), makeovers.. I could seriously go on for hours.

Thank you Jenn for always being the truest and kindest person I've ever met. Without you in my life I would feel incomplete. Don't ever, ever, ever change because you'd seriously be altering perfection.

I love you so much bestie!! xoxoxo

With waffles and syrup and everything oh my!! Eggo my lego!! (#) (#) (#)

SAFL :)!

hehe

Steph :)

P.S I loaf you.

Review: Jamberry - Dancing Lilac's

Hey all!

I hope you're having a fantastic long weekend so far! Thankfully the weather is amazing and we can finally start to enjoy consistent warmth!

I wanted to take some time to review a product I'd never think I'd like or even try. Nail wraps! For the first time ever I've tried nail wraps and I'm proud to say no one was killed during the application process :P.

I attended a Jamberry Nail party thrown by Jenn last month and picked up 4 different styles to try. The one I was most excited for was Dancing Lilac's which has a clear background and purple and pink flowers on the tips. I thought application would be hard but it's actually not too bad! It doesn't take that much longer than regular nail polish when you factor in the drying time.

The unique part about this is that you heat the wraps up and they seal onto your nail causing it to be much longer lasting than usual nail wraps.

Have you tried Jamberry? What are your favourite nail wraps?

Thanks for reading!

Healthy, cleaner snack ideas

Hi all,

As you may have seen in a previous post, I’ve been trying really hard to make an effort to be healthier and work on tracking. What has helped me do this is by not only pre-planning way ahead of time what I will be eating but also ensuring that I always have fresh and healthy foods stocked in my kitchen.

I find the meal part really easy as I looove cooking but tend to struggle to find healthier, clean snacks. Since I’m learning I figured I’d share what I’ve learned with you all. Here are a few clean snacks that I really enjoy:

  • Plain Greek Yogurt - Add fresh fruit or frozen fruit. I really like adding fresh pineapple or strawberries or frozen blueberries or raspberries. I find the blueberries add a nice little crunch. If you find it still tastes too plain you can add a bit of honey.

TIP: I always substitute greek yogurt when it calls for sour cream in pretty much every recipe. Tastes the exact same!
  • Fresh air-popped popcorn- From a popcorn maker! None of that bagged stuff.. they put so much crap in it! It’s unreal to see how little calories are in such a large amount when you pop it with air and no oil or butter.
  • Cottage Cheese- I prefer it plain but you can add cut up fruit, seeds, nuts, honey or just eat it along side veggies.
  • Raw Almonds, Hazelnuts, Pecans, Walnuts, etc. - Not a large amount as they are high in fat. But the good kind that you need! A small handful is all you need. One at a time peeps.. savour it! PLUS nuts have many, many health benefits.
  • Roasted Chickpeas- Though I have not perfected making these.. I still really like them! There are many recipes online or on pinterest.. if you find a good one let me know! haha
  • Hummus- Ideally served with a side of veggies(peppers are good scoopers)!! Though whole grain pita won’t kill you ;) Hummus is also INSANELY easy to make and goes a long way.
  • Guacamole- Quick and easy! Mash an Avocado, cut up some tomato and onion.. mix and you’re set! Oh yeah.. don’t forget to add lime or lemon to keep it tasting fresh.
  • Dark Chocolate- A little bit of dark chocolate on a regular basis can actually be good for you!
  • Pre-cut fruits or veggies- These are probably the cleanest you can go. Cut up cantaloupe is one of my favourites but its always good to have a variety available.

Some other ideas that I haven’t yet tried or maybe not that high on my “like” list would be hard boiled eggs, Steel-cut oatmeal and dried fruit.

Hope I gave you some inspiration!

Steph

Motivation Monday! Fail? 1. Get back up 2. Start over!

I'm feeling so fresh and renewed today! Positivity is in the air and I feel like spreading it around! I'm so happy to be feeling like myself again.

I have to admit I had been feeling pretty down and unhappy. I've been letting stupid, little things get to me instead of focusing on the things I love or that make me happy. In a way I had somewhat lost who I was and couldn't shake the negative feeling. I never thought I'd let myself go through that again.. but I did. It's so easy to take consistent backward steps thinking you'll catch yourself but then it becomes an uncontrollable downward spiral.

I don't like that feeling..

Sometimes you need to start with smaller changes to get back into feeling like yourself again or to get back into your routine. For me I started by letting things go. It's something I have been encouraging myself to do a lot more of lately.

"Don't sweat the small stuff .. it's just not worth it!" or "Does this really matter?" or "Is this really work being mad over?"

When you stress over things that just don't matter and you don't let it go it will just EAT at you. It will constantly be in the back of your mind and it will affect the people you are around.

Next I started incorporating goals into my day/week and found myself succeeding! I was pushing myself to get through it and then feeling incredibly encouraged once I had. Which led me to this 30 day tracking challenge (which is going well!) I had/have so much willpower built up there is NO chance I was/am going to let myself down on this one. I've been doing incredibly well and I've not only been eating better, sticking exactly to my MFP calories but also successfully planning out my entire day ahead. I'm reconsidering snack choices, buying healthier foods and noticing when I am making better choices. I even go to the grocery store without going down ANY aisles! Snacking has been my downfall or having it in the house isn't an option.

I've also been following old steps in the past that I found helped me succeed (measuring out food, having veggies cut up, selecting smarter options, planning smart when I want to have a treat.) When you plan you succeed.. when you fail to plan you do just that, fail.

If you want to be successful you need to put in all the work! Things won't fall into your lap.

Keep it up! Thanks for reading :)

Man-Pleasing Chicken Recipe

Hey all,

I HAVE to share this recipe. I made this for Pete and I a while ago and I was amazed at how delicious this tasted. It was quick, easy and packed a lot of flavour! I've tried this a few times, shared it, loved it, been thanked for sharing it.. so here I am! :)

I pinned this recipe a few years ago and left it sitting in my recipe board. On Saturday I went through my pins to find something new to try as I realized the only meat I had in my freezer was chicken breast. Although I altered this recipe by using the chicken breasts I have since tried it again and used thighs and it is just as good!

Here is the recipe:

Ingredients:
1/2 cup dijon mustard or dijon honey mustard
1/4 cup maple syrup
1 Tbsp rice wine vinegar (though I have used red wine vinegar and it still tasted good)
6 chicken thighs - 1-1.5 pounds (or equivilant weight in breasts)
salt and pepper

1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees and line a oven proof baking dish with foil (helps keep the sticky mess away from the dish!)
2. Mix Dijon mustard, maple syrup and wine vinegar together in a bowl.
3. Place chicken thighs in oven proof dish salt and pepper chicken.
4. Pour mustard, maple, vinegar mix over the the thighs.
5 Put in oven and bake for 40 minutes or until a meat thermometer reads 165 degrees. I re-basted the chicken every 15-20 mins.
6 Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving.
7 Plate the chicken making sure to spoon some sauce over the top. Sprinkle with fresh rosemary and enjoy!

You can find the full recipe here at Witty in the City.

Hope you enjoy and if you try please share your thoughts!

Review: TexasLiner Liquid Eye Liner by Cargo

Today I would like to review a product I received in my Holiday Glossy Box. This box was filled with some amazing goodies and it seriously makes me miss being a subscriber! I wanted to start off with my absolute favourite product from the box... the TexasLiner Eye Liner by Cargo.

You may or may not have picked up on the fact that I really dislike liquid eyeliner. I can confidently say that my opinion has been changed and I have found a new product to love! I have never in my life been able to put on a liquid eyeliner so quickly and efficiently. This stuff goes on very smooth and lasts for quite some time. I was initially disappointed with the longevity of the liner but the second time I added another coat and it lasted all day. I don't like wearing thick eyeliner and try to keep it more subtle so my pictures may not do this product justice. It takes seconds to apply and really finishes your look. I'd like to add that the TexasLiner is water based and also paraben-free.

Some pictures:

Looking down
With Mascara
A big feature of this product is that it is a "chubby" felt tip eyeliner which benefits your ability to create a very easy "cat eye" look with a simple swipe and is also very steady to hold in the hand.

I will DEFINITELY be buying this product again and can guarantee this will be staying in my makeup bag.

Lathered Up - All Natural Soaps

Hey all,

I hope you all are having a wonderful weekend so far! I'm very excited to review the product we are today not only because it's made by a friend but also because I've been using these soaps for quite awhile and I ABSOLUTELY love them.

A few weeks ago I was asked to review Lathered Up Soaps by Stephanie and I immediately took her up on her offer. I've tried many different kinds now and I have to admit I always have them in my bathroom.

A few key features of Lathered Up's all natural soaps:
  • Do not contain Palm Oil
  • Vegan friendly
  • Hand crafted
  • Locally made
I was very excited when she asked us to review her soaps and below are our thoughts on the products we were given to review:

Oatmeal Soother

Steph: This product is definitely one of my favourites. I tend to have dry and somewhat itchy hands in the fall/winter months and washing with this soap has really helped me because I find it very soothing and also exfoliating. I used this as a hand soap for awhile before actually deciding to try it in the shower and I am SO glad I did.  Rubbing the soap directly on my skin felt great and better than any luffa or exfoliating sponge I have ever tried. It was exfoliating but not irritating and made my skin feel incredibly soft. I would definitely use this product again and again! Truly wonderful.

Jenn: I enjoyed trying out this bar of soap, the smell is subtle but nice and soothing, definitely not over powering. I love the exfoliation it provides, especially on my legs. I typically like something with a much stronger fragrance so for me I will lean towards a more scented soap. I love the generous sized bar and presentation of the product. Totally recommend this soap to anyone who needs that extra exfoliation without the strong perfumes some soaps have.

Mango Butter and Soft Clay

Jenn: I have tried so many facial cleansers, it's kinda ridiculous! So trying this one was definitely a must. I used this soap for the first time and was not careful keeping it away from my eyes, as a result my eyes were so red and burny. Therefore this product is not something you want to use to remove eye makeup with. Maybe it's just me but I typically use my face wash to also remove my eye makeup. I do like the natural scent this facial soap has and I did not find it irritating to my sensitive acne prone skin. It was effective in removing heavy facial makeup, and was moisturizing at the same time.

Steph: I don't tend to try many cleansers as I've finally found one that works well for my skin. I did find this one did not irritate my skin whatsoever (which I've had issues with in the past when I've tried others). It did make my skin feel VERY soft and I loved the way that it lathered right up. The smell of this one is very natural and pleasant. Would recommend for someone looking to try something new!

Lavender

Jenn: I will be purchasing this one when I place my order, I need this soap in my rotation. The smell is beautiful and soft, and the bar of soap produces a nice luxurious lather. It makes my skin feel so squeaky clean without feeling dry. I tend to have very dry underarm areas that have patches, since using this soap my underarms have definitely improved. I also really like that the smell of this soap sticks to your skin, so even after rinsing I can still smell that beautiful hint of lavender after the bath. I love love love this one!

Steph: This one is by far my favourite! I've used about 3-4 bars of this soap since the start of the year and I have to admit it's always in one of my two bathrooms. It smells absolutely amazing and really gives you a clean feel. In the winter when I had extremely dry and scaly skin on just one of my hands (weird right?) it improved the dryness drastically! I couldn't believe the difference. I will definitely be keeping this in my regular rotation.

After using this soap for well over a year I really can't say one bad thing about any of them! Who doesn't like an all natural soap that still sells incredible? My newest favourite is the Lavendar Lemon Grass as it makes my bathroom smell absolutely amazing at ALL times! When I was my hands with it I seriously close my eyes and enjoy the moment! This is one my new staple soap!

Thanks so much for reading! Stay tuned for a giveaway we will be posting later in the week!

I'm back!

I'm baaaaaack!

Just imagine me singing that because right now I feel so good I could sing every sentence I speak! I am officially done the winter semester of school and completed my two exams earlier this week. The air has never felt fresher!

Can you tell how happy I am? :P

It was stressful.. starting a new job and going deep in two classes part time for school. That's over now and I am back to posting happy thoughts, positive stories and trying to inspire others! I also have some amazing reviews to share with you and other things to pass on.

Anyways, one thing that happened to me over the past few months is that I've been feeling pretty crappy about myself and my image. I gained back a ton of weight and was only 15 lbs away from my heaviest (ever). I hated the way my body looked and I knew I needed a drastic change because I wasn't going to stand for my negative attitude or my horrible habits anymore.

I decided to start a new type of 30 day challenge. I knew the only thing that would get me back on track was to start tracking again and to actually stick to it but I needed to find a way. I've done it where I've been motivated for two days and then the third is back to crappy eating, not tracking and not making healthy choices whatsoever. I've also set the goal of tracking everything before I eat it but once I missed it 1-2 times the motivation disappeared.

I decided to set a goal to track within 1 hour of eating. That allows me to either pre-track, track while eating or track post meal if I'm in a situation where it's rude to bust your phone out. It's actually working! I feel motivated, I'm spacing out my calories better and making smarter decisions on what to eat and *gasp* I'm actually eating fruits and vegetables again! I'm feeling back to my regular self and within the past week of getting my arse back on track I've lost 10 lbs! The one catch of my challenge is that if I miss tracking by more than an hour I have to start back at day 1. This has kept me on my toes!

Today is day 6 and I'm ready to rumble baby! Facing my challenges head on :).

What is challenging you? Start a challenge and test yourself!

Hope you have an amazing Thursday!

Winter Skin Care Tips

If there is one thing I'm sure of.. it's that winter can seriously damage your hair and skin SO much! Once it starts getting colder I have to not only completely change my skin care routine but I also have to start applying moisturizer A LOT more!

Taking care of your skin is no joke. It's important to take care of it to not only keep you safe but also healthy. Why do we have drier skin in the winter? It's easy... cold air contains much less moisture and humidity is low both inside and outdoors during the winter months.

Here are some tips I think I'd share:

- ** MOST IMPORTANT ** - It doesn't matter if it feels so cold you think your butt might fall off, that sun is still shining down on you even if you can't feel it. Don't forget your SPF! I use a SPF 40 year round because I am paranoid of getting dark spots and would really like to prevent the risk of skin cancer.  (Don't forget SPF for your lips too!)

- Hot long showers might feel good (especially when you're sick) but they can suck the moisture right out of your hair and skin. Try to have a quick, lukewarm shower as often as possible. This will also help prevent an itchy, dry scalp!

- If you need to, use a humidifier. Initially I got a humidifier because my throat started feeling awful at night time.. but the difference in my skin has been amazing! My heels don't feel as dry, my skin isn't scaly and even my nails aren't as flaky! I love it :)

- Dress appropriately outside! If you want to protect your skin you need to cover it. Use a scarf, hat, gloves and even sunglasses (to protect the delicate skin around the eyes.. I can feel a difference!)

- Drink your water! This is a general health tip as the amount of water one drinks does not change their skin that much. Just don't forget to include those glasses of water between the coffee, teas and hot chocolates. Hydrate from within!

- Moisturize after you bathe - It's easier to lock moisture into already damp skin. Ideally use an oil based moisturizer.

- Have dry heels? Take care of those feet and exfoliate with a pumice stone (or whatever you fancy) once a week. Top with lotion and a pair of comfy socks! (Best if done before bed.)

- Chapped lips are the worst! They can be seriously painful and annoying. Always keep a lip chap or balm on hand  (I typically stick with blistex or eos). If you have need to exfoliate the skin off your lips I'll share a few methods which I've tried:
  1.  Mix sugar with a tiny amount of olive oil until you get a paste consistency. Rub over your lips and then wash off with a damp, warm cloth. Apply lip balm.
  2. Mix sugar with honey (equal amounts) and add warm water if needed. Massage over lips and leave mixture on for 2-3 minutes. Rub off with a warm cloth. Apply lip balm.
  3. Mix water and baking soda (until gritty). Apply to lips with a soft bristled toothbrush and rub in a circular motion. Apply lip balm.
  4. Buy a lip scrub :). Though some can be expensive.
- Your hand's take a real beating in the winter. Using a hand cream as opposed to a lotion will help as they generally have a higher oil content in them.  Keeping bottles near all sinks should also help as a reminder to apply after washing your hands.

- Don't forget conditioner - It helps keep moisture in your hair and also helps with static!

I hope some of these have been helpful or have served as a reminder to you! Take care of your skin!

Have a happy family day!

Motivation Monday: Don't create a spiraled setback

What a wacky weekend we've had weather-wise! Saturday was amazing and all I wanted to do was go walking outside. On Sunday I opted for a gym workout as I didn't want to be outside in that slushy mess!

I wanted to share a picture I found that really stuck with me. One that I can completely relate to because I've been there.

I've given up on a goal just because of a single setback. That setback pushed me so far back I just spiraled and spiraled out of control. That led to me gaining a lot of weight back and losing every single healthy habit I had. It sucked.

But that's life and you learn. Next time I think about giving up or throwing in the towel I'm going to remember this picture and not let myself do it. You've got to do it for yourself!

Hope you have a great week!

Motivation Monday: Make the Jump

Hi all,

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and are ready for another great week!

I wanted to talk about believing in yourself today. Believing in yourself enough to step outside of your comfort zone and taking that leap of faith. It's easy to say that we want to change and easy to say where we want to go or how we want to do it. The major factor in that is the "doing" part. Taking that jump.. believing in yourself enough to say "this is what I want and I AM going to get it". Then actively taking the steps to get there.

This can be about anything at all. This can be about eating healthier, going to the gym more, trying to be more social, making family time a priority... basically anything where you are stepping outside of your comfort zone or a place where you may need improvement.

Some people say that they don't want to go to the gym because they're worried about what people think or that people might stare at them. Can you honestly look back and remember someone from your last trip to the gym? What someone was doing or what they were wearing? Unless I knew the person, I can't say that I do. It's time to start believing in yourself more and stop caring what other people think. Make yourself a priority and you will thank yourself later!

Believe in yourself folks! Become who you want to be!

Steph :)

Motivation Monday

Can you believe 2015 came so quickly? I'm still in shock over here!

2014 was a great year for me but it also included a lot of stress and personal testing. I went back to school and pushed myself harder than I ever had before. It was a great feeling and it paid off in the end as I got the best marks I have ever been given. By far one of the greatest decisions I have ever made!

I also will be starting a new job (today actually!) and am beyond excited. I will be getting back into doing what I love in the exact environment I have always said I'd like to work in. Just perfect!

This has taught me a lesson. Why wait for the good things to come to you when you can go out and make things happen for yourself? What is the difference between now and next year, or 2 years, 5 years and so on? Time spent working towards getting where you want to be and doing what you love :). Making the decision to go back to school and obtain my dream job in the last quarter of the year set my 2015 off in tthe best way possible.

Do what you love folks! Never second guess self improvement.

Take care and I hope you have a great week!

What I'm Wearing

Today's featured look is OPI Pure Lacquer Nail Apps in Zig Zag Sparkle.

This was my first time applying this brand of nail wraps and I am definitely pleased with the ease of application. However, the pack it comes in is a one use application, any extras will dry out and cannot be used in the future.

A bonus to these wraps is that there is no warming required and the material is very thin and flexible compared to other brands I have tried. This product is not long wearing, it lasted one day on my nails. I think they are great for that person looking for fancy nails for a night out but plan on not wearing them long term.

I got these as a gift so I am unsure of cost, I did do some research and found that many places online or in store sell OPI Nail Lacquer Nail Apps and the price ranges anywhere from $3-10(ish).

I could not stop looking at my glittery nails! So pretty!

Thanks for reading!
